Our History

The Open Road Theatre is a non-profit (501© 3 org. since 2004) theatre education performance company – from the North Shore of Boston, Massachusetts.  The Open Road Theatre was founded by Karen Dieruf with the support of committed parent volunteers wanting to fill a need for dramatic, full-length, multi-aged young peoples’ theatre productions performed by North Shore of Boston youth. Grades: K-12

ORT re-located to Rochester, New York (2015) dedicated to building The Open Road Theatre company afresh as: all-inclusive – welcoming multi-cultural, diverse people of all ages, race, heritages, genders, unique personal challenges or economic backgrounds participating as an ensemble of theatre artists for the benefit of everyone.

The Open Road Theatre’s shows are multi-age casts: -Young People: Ages: High School, Middle School, Elementary, College, including adults – working with – theatre professionals: actors, director designers and tech as mentors – performing in full-length – scripted dramas – not musicals – committed to high quality production values – inspired by beloved classical stories and plays – costumed in historical times – for the benefit of families, friends and the General Public of the Greater Rochester Communities.

Youth Casting is all-inclusive with no cuts – All youth who wish to be in an ORT show are cast in a role suited to his, her or their natural talents and abilities.

ORT is a tuition-based, theatre education performance company. Scholarships available.

New York State approved The Open Road Theatre’s non-profit: 501©3 org. status in August 2018.
